SUMMARY:Building Community
DESCRIPTION:Join us Sunday\, August 4th at 4:00 PM at the Corner Coffee Shop for this interactive “Building Community” event.  There is a lot to talk about with all that’s been happening.  The key topic for this meeting will be learning about Project 2025 and a video on the subject will be presented and discussed. \nProject 2025: Understanding it is Essential\nProject 2025 is the Conservative plan for the next Republican President to implement\, presumably Donald Trump in 2025\, if elected.   If you are already familiar with Project 2025\, then you are aware of the sweeping changes the plan calls for which will make our country unrecognizable in the future.  If this is relatively new to you\, then here is your chance to understand what is really at stake in this election and why it is critical that you show up and vote Democratic in November.  Project 2025… \n\nTakes Away Reproductive Freedom Nationwide\nSeeks retribution on political opponents and places restrictions on critical media outlets.\nTerminates the Constitution\nCentralizes power under Executive branch (Presidential power & loyalty rule\, checks and balances are gutted).\nDismantles or weakens Democratic institutions such as Dept. of Justice and the FBI to remove oversight on Executive power.\nPromotes conservative values by rolling back rights for LGBTQ+ community\, push strong anti-abortion policies\, and integrate Christian Nationalism in government policy.\nEnvironmental and Climate Policy efforts will be scrapped in favor of Business interests.\nGives Handouts to the Ultra Wealthy Paid for by Working Families\nAnd much more\n\nPlease follow this link and take the time to understand the potential impact of Project 2025 and why it is imperative to vote Dem in November. \nBuilding Community is an event where we are coming together to create a secure space to talk about our most pressing concerns about this election season and to develop ways to address them.  Michelle Maloney guides us in this moderator-led collaborative community planning event aims to amplify community voices and generate innovative avenues forward.  Our objectives include identifying actionable ideas that we can pursue throughout the evolving election season. \nIf you are so inclined you may bring a light refreshment\, juice\, or wine to share! Also\, a one dollar donation would be appreciated toward the venue expense.  Bring a pen!

SUMMARY:Banned Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The book selection for Monday\, August 12th 2024 is “1984″ by George Orwell. This book club meeting will be moderated by Ivor Groves. \n“George Orwell’s 1984 takes place in London in its titular year. Orwell imagined a grim future—a totalitarian state under the constant watch of Big Brother. With the Thought Police maintaining a hypervigilant control\, Winston Smith is in serious danger for having a well-functioning memory.  Tangled up in a forbidden love\, Winston joins the revolutionary Brotherhood\, determined to bring about the end of the Party. With his beloved Julia at his side\, he risks his life against those who hold all the power. \nWhile this groundbreaking novel has a place of honor as a PBS Great American Read Top 100 Pick\, it also maintains its status as the most banned book of all time in America. Why was it banned? Its social and political themes were found to be too controversial\, and its sexual content was deemed inappropriate.  In 1981\, Jackson County\, Florida\, challenged the book for being pro-communism. Considering large portions of the text are not only anti-communist but in fact anti-government all together\, this challenge seems like a bit of a stretch. Furthermore\, the book was based on the very real political climate of Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia\, warning against the totalitarianism that caused so much suffering in those countries and the regions over which they had influence.” \nPlease note that this meeting will take place in the Community Room at the Moss Memorial Library.  Entrance will be via the door on the same side as The Friends of the Library Book Store. \n  \nFOR THOSE WANTING TO PERUSE SOME BANNED BOOK LISTS:\nTop 100 Most Banned and Challenged Books: 2010-2019 complied by the American Library Association at ala.org\nPEN America’s The 11 Most Banned Books of the 2022-2023 School Year at pen.org \nThe Banned Book Club stands up for intellectual rights by reading and discussing books that have been banned in libraries right here in the United States.  Anyone who cares about the freedom to exchange ideas is welcome to attend.  You may also be interested in visiting The Banned Book Club website to learn how to stand up and fight book bans and also how to get access to banned books in communities where they were banned.

SUMMARY:Clay County Democratic Party Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:If you are wanting to help Dems win in November\, this particular meeting is a great opportunity for you to show up and express interest (first time volunteers or veteran volunteers… all are encouraged to attend).  We will not have a guest speaker this meeting\, but rather will focus on planning and strategizing for the next 3 months ahead.  We have a concrete metric of increasing Democratic voter turnout by 3% for this election and need all of the help we can get.  If you want to volunteer in some capacity to get us across the election finish line in November\, please join us. \nAll Clay County Democrats are invited to attend our monthly meeting at The Corner Coffee Shop in Hayesville.  The Clay County Democratic Party monthly meeting is on the fourth Tuesday of each month with our guest speaker starting at 6:00 PM followed by an opportunity to have a snack and socialize at 6:30.  The CCDP holds its business meeting starting around 7:00 PM\, and that portion of the meeting is also open for all Democrats to attend if they wish. \n

SUMMARY:Building Community
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday\, September 8th\, at 4:00 PM at the Corner Coffee Shop for “Building Community.” This event is a chance for us to come together in a safe and supportive environment to discuss our biggest concerns about the upcoming election season and explore ways to address them.   This month we will be screening the documentary film “Bad Faith“. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBAD FAITH is a feature-length documentary that explores the dangerous rise of Christian Nationalism in the United States. The film reveals the secretive political machinery that has relentlessly sought to weaken and destroy American democracy in order to promote its authoritarian vision1. Christian Nationalism has become the most powerful anti-democratic force in America\, with an unparalleled ability to destroy democracy from within. \n \n  \nMichelle Maloney guides us in this moderator-led collaborative community planning event that aims to amplify community voices and generate innovative avenues forward.  Our objectives include identifying actionable ideas that we can pursue throughout the evolving election season. \nIf you are so inclined you may bring a light refreshment\, juice\, or wine to share! Also\, a one dollar or two donation would be appreciated toward the venue expense.  Bring a pen! \nNOTE: The meeting on Voter Suppression is postponed until October.

DESCRIPTION:Here is your chance to see the far-right MAGA candidate who seeks to destroy public education face off against Mo Green.  This is a livestream event you can watch from home. \n“It still amazes me that this woman is a candidate\, given her history of anti public school rants\, her call to invoke the Insurrection Act to keep Trump in office\, her support of private school vouchers\, and lately her call to reject federal funding of 1.5 billion dollars. She is dangerous\, as is her friend running for governor.” – Betty Lohr \n“Go Mo! Qualified\, experienced\, respectable!” – Mike Mele \nJoin NCPTA and Public Schools First NC on Saturday\, September 14 from 10-11am for a NC Superintendent of Public Instruction Candidate Forum. Please register and we will send you a link the morning of September 14th to the livestream. SUMMARY:Clay County Democratic Party Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:This month we are  continuing to plan volunteer activities and plan our GOTV voter outreach.  If you are wanting to help Dems win in November we would love to see you at this meeting.  We will not have a guest speaker this meeting\, but rather will focus on the continued planning and strategizing for the final 2 crunch months ahead.

SUMMARY:Building Community
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday\, October 6th\, at 4:00 PM at the Corner Coffee Shop for “Building Community.” This event is a chance for us to come together in a safe and supportive environment to discuss our biggest concerns about the upcoming election season and explore ways to address them.  This month’s meeting will focus on the subject of Voter Suppression.  We will also have postcards for attendees to write to try to encourage left leaning voters to show up at the polls. \nMichelle Maloney guides us in this moderator-led collaborative community event that aims to amplify community voices and generate innovative avenues forward.  Our objectives include identifying actionable ideas that we can pursue throughout the evolving election season. \nIf you are so inclined you may bring a light refreshment\, juice\, or wine to share! Also\, a one dollar or two donation would be appreciated toward the venue expense.  Bring a pen!

SUMMARY:Banned Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The book selection for Monday\, October 14th 2024 is  The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas (2017). \n“The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas was challenged in 2017 for drug use\, profanity and language. Starr\, a Black high school student sorting through the turmoil after witnessing the death of a friend at the hands of a police officer\, is eventually drawn toward activism confronting institutionalized racism in the police department. Starr has a clearly drawn\, complex inner life\, and is surrounded by lived-in characters who balance out the viewpoints in the story\, and show both the support and the challenges that Starr faces. Thomas manages to both write an entertaining\, non-didactic book\, and to illustrate how Starr’s story is both universal and specific.”\nThe movie can be watched on Amazon Prime. \nWe are now practicing our new Democratized Community Moderating:\n1) Readers will email a question to discuss about the book selection to wendyaslaton@bellsouth.net;\n2) Members will read a short web biography of the author prior to our meeting;\n3) Submitted questions will be compiled and printed for our breakout discussion groups.\nPlease submit your discussion question during week of October 7th. \nThis meeting will take place in the Community Room at the Moss Memorial Library.  Entrance will be via the door on the same side as The Friends of the Library Book Store. \nFOR THOSE WANTING TO PERUSE SOME BANNED BOOK LISTS:\nTop 100 Most Banned and Challenged Books: 2010-2019 complied by the American Library Association at ala.org\nPEN America’s The 11 Most Banned Books of the 2022-2023 School Year at pen.org \nThe Banned Book Club stands up for intellectual rights by reading and discussing books that have been banned in libraries right here in the United States.  Anyone who cares about the freedom to exchange ideas is welcome to attend.
