SUMMARY:Building Community
DESCRIPTION:Join us Sunday\, June 2nd at 4:00 PM at the Corner Coffee Shop for this interactive “Building Community” event.  As the 2024 presidential election approaches\, we are coming together to create a secure space to talk about our most pressing concerns about this election season and to develop ways to address them.  Michelle Maloney guides us in this moderator-led collaborative community planning event aims to amplify community voices and generate innovative avenues forward.  Our objectives include identifying actionable ideas that we can pursue throughout the evolving election season. \nIf you are so inclined you may bring a light refreshment\, juice\, or wine to share! Also\, a one dollar donation would be appreciated toward the venue expense.  Bring a pen! \nOur first meeting primarily focused on introductions and voicing concerns. Some topics included: \n\nconcerns about dialoguing with those who see things differently\nexpanding our outreach\nhow to respond to possible authoritarian rule\nfocusing on house and senate races and other down ballot\,  in addition to the presidential\nusing social media successfully\nexpanding turnout in our community\ndefining who we are and what we stand for so that we are heard\ncoexisting with those who think differently\nreaching out to Latinos\, LGBTQ\, racial and religious minorities\nfocusing on climate\, women’s rights\nunderstanding the Overton Window\n\nIn this second meeting we will dig deeper into some of the issues identified in the first meeting and discuss ideas on action.  Don’t worry if you missed the first meeting\, all are welcome to attend.

DESCRIPTION:The book selection for Monday\, June 10th 2024 is Song in a Weary Throat: Memoir of an American Pilgrimage (1987) by Pauli Murray. \n“Her tireless efforts to challenge the boundaries of race\, gender\, and sexuality continue to inspire a new generation of activists\, reminding us that the fight for justice is far from over.” \nThis book club meeting will be moderated by Pat Wikstrom.   Please also note that this meeting will take place in the Community Room at the Moss Memorial Library.  Entrance will be via the door on the same side as The Friends of the Library Book Store. \nFOR THOSE WANTING TO PERUSE SOME BANNED BOOK LISTS:\nTop 100 Most Banned and Challenged Books: 2010-2019 complied by the American Library Association at ala.org\nPEN America’s The 11 Most Banned Books of the 2022-2023 School Year at pen.org \nThe Banned Book Club stands up for intellectual rights by reading and discussing books that have been banned in libraries right here in the United States.  Anyone who cares about the freedom to exchange ideas is welcome to attend.  You may also be interested in visiting The Banned Book Club website to learn how to stand up and fight book bans and also how to get access to banned books in communities where they were banned.

SUMMARY:Clay County Democratic Party Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:All Clay County Democrats are invited to attend our monthly meeting at The Corner Coffee Shop in Hayesville.  The Clay County Democratic Party monthly meeting is on the fourth Tuesday of each month with our speaker starting at 6:00 PM followed by an opportunity to socialize at 6:30.  The CCDP holds its business meeting starting around 7:00 PM\, and this meeting is also open for all Democrats to attend if they wish. \nThe speaker for this month is Julia Buckner. Julia is an extremely talented and experienced organizer and fundraiser\, having worked with campaigns\, political parties\, PAC’s\, and non-profits. \nJulia completed her undergraduate work at Western Carolina University\, graduating as a NC Teaching Fellow\, and spent eleven years teaching high school science. She took her summers off as an opportunity to continue her work with the United Methodist Church\, leading work teams from across the country as they traveled to the far western region of our state repairing homes and building relationships within our Appalachian communities. \nLeaving the classroom to pursue full-time ministry\, Julia became the director of program ministries and later the director of development and marketing at the Hinton Rural Life Center in Hayesville\, NC. \nThis intersection of community development\, faith\, and politics led Julia to Emory University where she obtained her M.Div. degree in 2009. Julia’s academic research centers around missiology\, and she is a past faculty member at Emory University’s Regional Course of Study School. \nDuring the 2008 election cycle\, Julia became involved with the Clay County Democrats\, volunteering for the Obama team\, and learning for the first time what “GOTV” actually stood for. She has served as President of the Tri-County Democratic Women\, is a past Chair of the Clay County Democrats\, was the President of the Democratic Women of NC\, was our first statewide Organizing Director\, and has managed several legislative and state-wide campaigns. \nIn 2017\, Julia’s work took her to Raleigh where she served as the Finance Director for the North Carolina Senate Democratic Caucus raising over 2 million dollars and helping to flip the six seats we needed to break the Republican supermajority. Most recently\, Julia was serving as the Executive Director for the Mecklenburg Dems and when she isn’t knee-deep in election statistics she’s trying in vain to organize her basement!
