DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Freedom Celebration family-friendly picnic by the scenic Lake Chatuge! Come and meet our Democratic candidates—some will be there in person\, while others will be represented in print.   The celebration starts 12:00 PM Saturday July 6th for at Pavillion #3 of the Clay County Park Campground.  This is our Kick Off for Election Action where you can meet candidates\, volunteers\, and other community members who want to learn more about our Democratic candidates.  The candidates have been invited to speak and meet the voters in south-west North Carolina\, and the list of the Democratic Candidates on our county ballots may be found here. A main lunch dish will be provided\, but you are welcome to bring a side dish\, dessert\, or other shareable item if you wish. \nWOW! DESCRIPTION:The book selection for Monday\, July 8th 2024 is Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson (2020) \n“Wilkerson is unmatched in her ability to take colossal\, weighty concepts like race\, class and caste and distill them into smooth accessible prose.…pages fly by\, even as you savor each paradigm-shifting idea.” \nThis book club meeting will be moderated by Wendy Slaton.   Please also note that this meeting will take place in the Community Room at the Moss Memorial Library.  Entrance will be via the door on the same side as The Friends of the Library Book Store. \nFOR THOSE WANTING TO PERUSE SOME BANNED BOOK LISTS:\nTop 100 Most Banned and Challenged Books: 2010-2019 complied by the American Library Association at ala.org\nPEN America’s The 11 Most Banned Books of the 2022-2023 School Year at pen.org \nThe Banned Book Club stands up for intellectual rights by reading and discussing books that have been banned in libraries right here in the United States.  Anyone who cares about the freedom to exchange ideas is welcome to attend.  You may also be interested in visiting The Banned Book Club website to learn how to stand up and fight book bans and also how to get access to banned books in communities where they were banned.

Please bring your favorite pen or marker\, many hands will make light work. \nBuilding Community is an event where we are coming together to create a secure space to talk about our most pressing concerns about this election season and to develop ways to address them.  Michelle Maloney guides us in this moderator-led collaborative community planning event aims to amplify community voices and generate innovative avenues forward.  Our objectives include identifying actionable ideas that we can pursue throughout the evolving election season. \nIf you are so inclined you may bring a light refreshment\, juice\, or wine to share! Also\, a one dollar donation would be appreciated toward the venue expense.  Bring a pen!

DESCRIPTION:The Clay County Democrats July Meeting will be modified to encourage everyone to show their support for Nancy Curtis at her Campaign Kickoff reception.  Clay County Democrats will gather at 5:00 PM at the Corner Coffee Shop on the square in Hayesville in order to carpool to the event.  The Nancy Curtis Campaign Kickoff Reception is at 6:00 PM at The Blue Stage in Andrews NC.  Nancy Curtis is our wonderful Democratic Candidate for NC House District 120 and you can learn more about her at her website here.  The reception is being sponsored by the Cherokee County Democrats with a $25 ticket fee and you may let them know you are coming ahead of time by signing up here.   We will get back to our normal county party meeting location and schedule in August\, but for this month we all want to get out and show our support for Nancy Curtis.  See you there!
